Applying 4R (Right Nutrient Source to apply at the Right Rate in the Right Place at the Right Time) strategies and novel fertilizers will have direct and indirect effects on crop yield, emissions of greenhouse gasses, agricultural land needed for food, efficiency of fresh water use, biodiversity and soil-, air- and water pollution, which all ultimately affect economic development, hunger and poverty. The impact of fertilizer interventions on several of these factors can be quantitatively assessed to raise awareness among stakeholders.
